The main factors influencing rumen health are the composition of feed and the quality of the raw materials. Vast amounts of highly digestible carbohydrates and / or a low percentage of fibre lead to an overproduction of fatty acids acidifying the ruminal fluid and impairing bacterial digestion in the rumen.
Heat stress can also lead to acidosis. Due to excessive panting, considerable amounts of CO2 leave the body and therefore buffer capacity decreases. Buffering the blood has higher importance than buffering the rumen, hence heat stress can also lead to rumen acidosis.
Rumen health is one of the most important preconditions for performance in milk and meat, therefore steps must be taken to prevent an impaired balance in ruminal flora. Besides a balanced feed ration with a sufficient amount of fibre, innovative products should be used to support ruminants in times of high energy requirements and therefore imbalanced rations.
Our Rumen Health Program is based on products containing natural ingredients to favour animal health. Products based on secondary plant compounds modulate ruminal fermentation and increase the synthesis of microbial protein. The utilization of the energy contained in the feed is improved when using these products. With an additional use of encapsulated and therefore slow-release feed grade urea it is possible to replace a higher percentage of protein rich feed. This allows the inclusion of a higher percentage of crude fiber to the diet to promote rumen health.
