Active principle
Finished feed is often exposed to mold growth while sitting in between production and usage. Moist cereals and TMR are more exposed still, because the water activity that makes them useful is the same water activity that makes them a substrate. What is lost is critical: energy, palatability and shelf life go first, and heating and caking follow.

Mold inhibitors act on anything that will be stored. In practice, a mill runs a preservation product continuously, across compound feed destined for farm silos and across moist cereals and TMR where water activity is high. Inclusion follows from moisture content and the expected time between production and consumption. Where the problem is an existing microbial load rather than future growth, the answer is a sanitizer; where it is mycotoxins already present in the raw material, the answer is a toxin binder.
