The same chemistry, a different set of molecules

Stabilon is the ethoxyquin-free antioxidant range, built on BHA, BHT and propyl gallate, in a liquid for fat and meal streams and a dry format for premixes and complete feed.

The regulatory position on ethoxyquin closed the EU market to the largest part of the feed antioxidant category, and customer specifications in petfood have narrowed it further. What did not change is the chemistry of the problem. Lipid oxidation still begins as soon as fat meets oxygen, heat and metal ions, and it still costs metabolizable energy, vitamins A, D and E, carotenoid pigments and palatability. The task is to deliver the same protection from a different set of molecules.

  • BHA and BHT are authorized EU feed additives in the technological additive category, functional group antioxidants.
  • Synergistic blends allow lower total inclusion than any single antioxidant.
  • Protection must start at the ingredient, at rendering or crushing, not at the finished feed.

Radical scavenging.

Phenolic antioxidants donate a hydrogen atom to lipid peroxyl radicals, interrupting the chain reaction that propagates rancidity.

Synergy between actives.

BHT paired with BHA in the liquid, and with propyl gallate in the dry format, gives greater protection per unit than either molecule delivers alone.

Pigment and vitamin protection.

Carotenoid pigments and vitamins A, D and E oxidize alongside the fat. The dry format is positioned specifically to protect them, with free metal chelation preventing the oxidation of vitamins.

Format and substrate.

The liquid is dosed into rendered fats and protein meals at the rendering plant; the dry format is dosed into premix, concentrate and complete feed.

Format and substrate.

The liquid is for fat and meal and is applied at the rendering or crushing plant. The dry format is for premix, concentrate and complete feed and is applied at blending or at the mixer.

Verification.

Antioxidant performance is verified on the substrate, by peroxide value or accelerated oxidation testing under the storage conditions the ingredient or feed will actually see.

Stabilon 4 is the liquid for rendered fats and protein meals, applied at the rendering plant.
