Acidification for feed hygiene and a stable gut

The Acidomix line covers feed and drinking water with liquid, powder and micro-granulated organic acid blends, from single-acid hygiene products to buffered multi-acid formulations.

Species

Pigs, poultry, fish; selected products for all species

Application

Compound feed, raw materials, drinking water, feed mill hygiene

Active principle

Blends of formic, propionic, lactic, acetic and fumaric acids and their salts

Gut Health

Two control points, one strategy

Organic acids do two jobs at once. In feed and water they lower microbial load before it ever reaches the animal. In the digestive tract they lower gastric pH, compensating for immature or insufficient hydrochloric acid production and activating proteolytic enzymes. Acidomix covers both routes in the formats a feed mill or a farm can actually apply.

Feed and water are the largest daily inputs on any farm and the most common route for microbial contamination. Salmonella control programs, wet litter, unspecific diarrhea and post-weaning dysbiosis all trace back to these inputs. Acidification leaves no residues in edible tissue, requires no withdrawal period, is not associated with the resistance selection attributed to in-feed antibiotics, and works across the feed chain from raw material intake to the drinker line.

How organic acids work

0

Undissociated acid crosses the membrane.

In the acidic environment of the stomach, and locally around the acid particle in feed, organic acids remain largely undissociated, cross the bacterial cell membrane and dissociate inside the cell, collapsing internal pH and diverting energy to proton export.

0

Selective pressure on Gram-negative pathogens.

Enterobacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella are considerably more sensitive to this mechanism than lactic acid bacteria, which shifts the balance of the gastrointestinal microflora.

0

Enzyme activation.

Lowering gastric pH activates pepsinogen to pepsin and improves protein digestion, particularly relevant in weaned piglets with limited acid secretion.

0

Acid binding capacity.

Formulation determines how much acid is available after the buffering effect of the diet. Buffered and salt-containing blends hold a target pH range without over-acidifying.

Water acidification for a healthy gut microflora

A water acidifier with strong antimicrobial characteristics that impairs the development of bacteria, yeasts and moulds in the drinking water system. It reduces microbial intake with the water, supports a healthy gut microflora and improves digestibility. No residues and no withdrawal period.

Buffered water acidifier

A buffered liquid water acidifier that optimizes water pH, helps stabilize the gut microflora and supports the prevention of pathogen challenges. Acidification stimulates enzyme production and supports nutrient digestibility. The buffered formulation holds the target pH range even at higher dose rates.

Technical notes

Application routes.

Feed-applied products act on the feed matrix and, after ingestion, in the upper digestive tract. Water-applied products act on the water system, including biofilm, and reduce the microbial dose delivered with every drink. Neither route creates residues in edible tissue or requires a withdrawal period.

Formulation types.

Micro-granulates carry acid on a mineral or silicic acid carrier for dust-free handling and slower release. Liquids allow dosing at the mill or in the drinker line. Buffered formulations combine free acids with their salts to hold a defined pH range.

Compatibility.

Organic acid programs are routinely combined with phytogenics and toxin binders. Confirm sequencing and mixing order with your technical contact, particularly for liquid applications through the same line.

What the trials show

Antimicrobial activity against key livestock pathogens (MIC/MBC evaluation):

Evidenced in 1 in vitro microdilution study using reference strains of Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus suis, Clostridium perfringens, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger at 10⁵ CFU/mL. Compared with individual organic acids, Acidomix W showed the lowest MIC values and mostly lower MBC values, indicating a stronger inhibitory and bactericidal effect against major bacterial and fungal microorganisms relevant to animal production.

Broad-spectrum pathogen control in waterline applications:

: In the same in vitro antimicrobial assessment, Acidomix W demonstrated activity across both Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella, E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (S. suis, C. perfringens), as well as yeast and mold species (C. albicans, A. niger). The study concluded that the complete Acidomix W formulation was more effective than the individual organic acids tested separately.

Where it fits

Start by deciding which control point matters most. If raw material quality and Salmonella status drive the risk, the answer is a feed-applied acidifier at the mill. If the water system is the weak point, or if the challenge appears mid-cycle and needs a fast response, the answer is a water acidifier. Piglet and post-weaning diets frequently justify both, because the objective there is digestive as much as hygienic.
