Gut Health

Why phytogenics need a delivery system

Phytomolecules are volatile. Most of them are lost in the conditioner before the feed ever reaches the animal. The Activo line is built around that problem: standardized dosing of selected plant compounds, protected by microencapsulation, released in the gastrointestinal tract rather than in the pellet mill.

Conditioning in commercial feed production typically runs at 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, and up to 95 degrees Celsius in long-conditioning and expander systems. Unprotected phytomolecules volatilize under those conditions, so the declared inclusion rate and the dose that actually reaches the gut are two different numbers. A phytogenic is only as good as the proportion of active substance that survives the mill and is released in the right segment of the digestive tract.

Modes of action

0

Antimicrobial.

Selected phenolic and terpenoid compounds interact with bacterial cell membranes and inhibit the growth of enteric pathogens, while leaving beneficial microbiota substantially less affected.

0

Digestive.

Phytomolecules stimulate the secretion and activity of digestive enzymes and bile, supporting more complete nutrient utilization.

0

Antioxidant.

Plant phenolics scavenge free radicals and support the animal’s oxidative balance under heat, transport and disease stress.

0

No documented resistance.

Phytomolecules act on several bacterial targets at once, and no transferable resistance determinant has been described for them, which is why phytogenics are used inside antibiotic reduction programs.

What the trials show

Feed conversion and growth performance in broilers

Across 7 quantified broiler trials ranging from 640 to 2,056,857 birds in Turkey, Germany, Sri Lanka, Brazil, the USA, and Australia, Activo improved FCR by 2 to 15 points or improved mortality-adjusted FCR while also increasing final weight or ADG. Examples include 69,520 Ross 308 broilers in Turkey with 2-point lower FCR and 1.5% higher ADG, 50,000 broilers in Sri Lanka with FCR improving from 1.97 to 1.82, and 2,056,857 broilers in Brazil with 2-point better corrected FCR and 3% higher ADG.

Fattening pig efficiency and days to market

In 5 quantified pig fattening trials covering 320 to 30,573 pigs in Germany, Brazil, and the Czech Republic, Activo improved feed conversion by 6 to 30 points or by 5% on average, with associated gains in ADG and shorter finishing periods. The strongest individual field result was the Czech trial with 6,272 pigs, where Activo improved adjusted FCR from 2.81 to 2.51, increased ADG from 815 to 912 g, shortened fattening by 13 days, and reduced mortality from 5.4% to 2.9%.

Post-weaning piglet performance and survivability

In 4 piglet/weaner trials conducted in Australia, Germany, and China, involving 140 pigs per weekly entry over four entries, 1,564 piglets, 815 piglets, and 192 weaned pigs, Activo or Activo-based programs improved weight gain, FCR, survivability, and gut-health outcomes. Reported effects included 1 kg higher weight gain and 13-19 points better FCR in Australian weaners, 50% lower mortality in a German post-weaning study, 800 g higher nursery weight versus a competitor product, and 38% vs. 61% diarrhea incidence versus challenged control in the Chinese E. coli K88 model.

Layer and breeder egg-output efficiency

In 7 quantified layer, breeder, and grandparent-stock trials in Germany, the Philippines, China/unspecified wheat-diet study context, the Czech Republic, India, and the Netherlands, trial sizes ranged from 480 layers to 25,835 commercial layers and 16,800 grandparents. Improvements included 1.4 g higher egg weight and 2.5% higher egg mass in 25,835 German layers, 11-point better FCR for egg mass in 480 Philippine layers, 3.24-3.36% higher production and 150 g more egg mass per hen in 576 Hy-Line layers, and 5.5 more hatchable eggs per hen housed in the Indian breeder GHM program.

Gut integrity, pathogen load, and lesion-related outcomes

In 6 challenge or microbiological trials with 192 weaned pigs, 450 broilers, 480 broilers, 640 broilers, 1,155 broilers, and 1,400 broilers in China, India, Brazil, Australia, and the USA, Activo-based treatments reduced disease-associated parameters. Specific findings included lower diarrhea incidence after E. coli K88 challenge, 6-7 log reductions in total bacterial counts in crop/caecum, 0.34-0.35 log lower enterobacteria in breast meat, 66% fewer severe footpad lesions vs. antibiotics, and lower NE lesion scores under necrotic enteritis challenge.

Processing stability of active compounds

In 1 feed-processing stability trial conducted in Germany at DIL with analysis by IGV, 10 samples per processing temperature were analyzed. Activo showed the highest recovery rate among tested products, with 94.7% recovery after pelleting at 70 °C for approx. 3 minutes and 82.1% recovery at 90 °C, supporting the technological stability of the microencapsulated phytomolecule formulation rather than an in-vivo performance claim.

Where it fits

Activo is the base program product, included continuously in compound feed. Activo Liquid is the response layer, applied through the waterline during transitions, vaccination windows, heat stress or clinical challenges. Activo Premium covers the ruminant side. Activo SOL addresses the environmental reservoir. Most customers run the feed product continuously and add the liquid tactically.
