Feed Quality

One health. Two check points

Organic acids do two jobs at once. In feed and water they lower the microbial load before it ever reaches the animal. In the digestive tract of young animals they lower gastric pH, compensating for immature or insufficient hydrochloric acid production and activating proteolytic enzymes. Acidomix covers both routes.

Feed and water are the largest daily inputs on any farm and the most common route for microbial contamination affecting the health of your animals. Salmonella control programs, wet litter, unspecific diarrhea and post-weaning dysbiosis all trace back to these inputs. Acidification leaves no residues in edible tissue, requires no withdrawal period, is not associated with the resistance selection attributed to in-feed antibiotics, and works across the feed chain from raw material intake to the drinker line.

How organic acids work

0

Undissociated acid crosses the membrane.

Below their respective pKa, organic acids remain largely undissociated, cross the bacterial cell membrane and dissociate inside the cell, releasing protons which disturb essential cellular processes, leading – together with direct microbial membrane damage, to growth inhibition or even death of the microbe

0

Selective antimicrobial effects.

Enteric pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella tend to be more sensitive to organic acid exposure than lactic acid bacteria, which shifts the balance of the gastrointestinal microflora.

0

Enzyme activation.

Lowering gastric pH supports the conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin and facilitates protein digestion. This is particularly relevant in weaned piglets with limited gastric acid secretion, as long as attention is paid to the buffering capacity of the diet.

0

Extending the activity with salts.

Salts of organic acids provide more gradual acidification than free acids while improving handling through lower volatility. Combining free acids and salts allows to balance acidification capacity and handling properties.

Liquid acidifier for feed hygiene

A liquid organic acid blend whose antimicrobial action improves feed hygiene, stabilizes the gastrointestinal microflora and improves protein digestion by lowering pH and the acid binding capacity of the feed. Applied in the feed it markedly reduces microbial load and is used as a preventive measure in Salmonella control.

Technical notes

Application routes.

Feed-applied products act on the feed matrix and, after ingestion, in the upper digestive tract. Water-applied products act on the water system, including biofilm, and reduce the microbial dose delivered with every drink. Neither route creates residues in edible tissue or requires a withdrawal period.

Formulation types.

Micro-granulates carry acid on a selected carrier for dust-free handling and slower release. Liquids allow dosing at the mill or in the drinker line. Buffered formulations combine free acids with their salts to hold a defined pH range.

Compatibility.

Organic acid programs are routinely combined with phytogenics and toxin binders. Confirm program application and mixing order with your technical contact, particularly for liquid applications through the same line.

What the trials show

Salmonella control:

In vitro dry-feed trial with S. typhimurium: 0.4% Acidomix AFG and AFL reduced pathogen load by over 60% in 18 h; 1% achieved over 95% reduction in the same time.

Enterobacteria control:

In vitro dry-feed trial with E. coli K88: 0.4% Acidomix AFG and AFL reduced pathogen load by 50 to 80% in 18 h; 1% achieved over 95% reduction in the same time.

Acidomix FG helps weaning piglets thrive:

at the University of Göttigen (Germany), weaned piglets (21 days, 6.6 kg) supplemented with 0.5% Acidomix FG for 35 days showed improved feed efficiency and 8% higher growth compared to the control piglets.

Feed Quality

Where it fits

Start by deciding which control point matters most. If raw material quality and Salmonella status drive the risk, the answer is a feed-applied acidifier at the mill. If the water system is the weak point, or if the challenge appears mid-cycle and needs a fast response, the answer is a water acidifier. Piglet and post-weaning diets frequently justify both, because the objective there is digestive as much as hygienic.
