AMR, on the other hand, is not a disease in itself but makes various bacterial infections difficult to treat and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is considered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a pandemic due to its\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dramatic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">global<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scope (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X(21)00163-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cars et al., 2021<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).\u00a0Both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pandemics,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0\u2018loud\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-19\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the\u00a0\u2018silent\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AMR <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, are monitored by official institutions. Still, for both, significant uncertainties around actual case figures\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, especially <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">low-income countries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beginning in China\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">around<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> December\u00a02019,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SARS-CoV-2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> spread to the rest of the world within a few\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">months<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Figures collated by the WHO<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> show<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> over 250 million confirmed cases and over 5 million deaths to date<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">excess mortality rates indicating this to be an under<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">estimation. Quantifying the d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eath toll\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">due to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0AMR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is far more challenging, as disease conditions vary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, resistant bacteria go undetected,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or the causative pathogens\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> not identified in the first place <span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW27874987\" lang=\"EN-US\" This figure would represent twice the number of people who die<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22079138 BCX0\">d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22079138 BCX0\"> from COVID-19 within <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22079138 BCX0\">the last\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22079138 BCX0\">two years.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP TrackedChange SCXW22079138 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the US and the EU, according to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/globalhealth\/infographics\/antibiotic-resistance\/antibiotic_resistance_global_threat.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, antibiotic resistance causes 23,000 and 25,000 deaths per year, respectively. In Thailand, 38,000 deaths are attributable to ABR. And in India, 58,000+ babies died from infections with resistant bacteria, usually passed on from their mothers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811232\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Woerther\u00a0et al.\u00a0(2013)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0note\u00a0a continuous increase of resistant strains globally. In 2010\/11, ESBL carriage rates of 3\u00a0to\u00a020 %\u00a0were the \u201cnorm\u201d, but some WHO regions already showed 60\u00a0to\u00a070% carriage rates by 2011.\u00a0In the US, 223,900 cases of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clostridium difficile<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0occurred in 2017, and at least 12,800 people died\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugresistance\/pdf\/threats-report\/2019-ar-threats-report-508.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CDC, 2019<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As in the case of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SARS-CoV-2,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sprea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d of AMR organisms can be prevented by hygiene measures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xcept for hospital settings reported<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in developed countries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spread of resistant bacteria is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">invisible. Regardless of how little we know about it from official reports, there are indications that bacteria resistance is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ubiquitous, triggered to a large extent by the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(over)use of antibiotics in community settings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moreover, it is far more dif<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ficult to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ident<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ify that a patient suffers from AMR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">infection than from SARS-CoV-2. The latter is easily detected with widespread testing systems<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including self-testing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">COVID and AMR\u00a0have severe economic consequences<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Besides claiming many lives, both COVID and AMR increase the costs for healthcare. Additionally, due to high sickness ratios and lockdowns, economic losses are tremendous. For COVID as well as for AMR patients, the hospitals need specialized systems and procedures (ventilation apparatus, extraordinary hygiene measures) and specially qualified personnel to treat the infected persons. In addition to the cases of infection, mental illness increases due to these exceptional circumstances.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 aria-level=\"4\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">US study extrapolates\u00a0ten-figure\u00a0costs due to AMR<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a US cohort study\u00a0based on records\u00a0of\u00a025,000 patients from\u00a02007-2015,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33512523\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nelson et al. data-contrast=\"auto\">), the COVID-19 pandemic is reported to influence the transmission of bacterial infections and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Several reasons and facts argue for this statement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bacterial co-infections are often identified\u00a0on top of\u00a0viral respiratory infections. These are then\u00a0the main reasons for higher morbidity and mortality (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.egms.de\/static\/pdf\/journals\/dgkh\/2020-15\/dgkh000370.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mahmoudi, 2020<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Also, <strong>COVID-19 weakens\u00a0the immune system of people and paves the way for secondary infections<\/strong>. This is the reason why, in some cases, COVID-19 patients are given antibiotics prophylactically. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7832079\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Langford and co-workers (2020)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0published a summary of different studies concerning this topic, and other authors confirm this tendency (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7836762\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Garcia-Vidal et al., 2021<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7197596\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rawson et al., 2020<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7919515\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rodr\u00edguez-Ba\u00f1os, 2021<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8172149\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Russel et al., 2021<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). They reported a relatively low incidence of bacterial co-infections\u00a0of\u00a03.5%\u00a0(95% CI 0.4-6.7%) and secondary bacterial infections\u00a0of\u00a014.3%\u00a0(95% CI 9.6-18.9%). The European Union has already made strides and banned antibiotics as growth promoters in animal production in 2006. The Netherlands has been leading the way when it comes to a reduction in veterinary prescribed antibiotics. From 2009 to 2018, antibiotic sales decreased by 70% (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/show\/Nethmap-MARAN-2020.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">de Greeff et al., MARAN Report, 2020<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). We saw how fast progress in healthcare could suffer setbacks and we were forced to recognize the need for resilient health systems (Cars, 2021). <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pandemic can teach us a valuable lesson in this respect. We must realize that it is essential to use antibiotics further as an effective tool to treat harmful diseases. To that end, we must do everything we can to keep this weapon sharp. The first step is to reduce antibiotic use in human health, as well as in <a href=\"https:\/\/ew-nutrition.com\/en-uk\/broiler-production-with-reduced-antibiotics-the-essentials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">livestock production<\/a>. It will not be an easy way.
