Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by aerobic moulds, present in grains from field to storage, plant by-products and preserved forages. The toxins causing most concern due to their toxicity and level of occurrence are aflatoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, T2 and deoxynivalenol. In animal feeds, mycotoxins are typically present in combinations, which can cause a synergistic effect with regards to their toxicity. The effects range from reduced feed intake, immunosuppression and reduced fertility to liver damage and death. Residues of some mycotoxins constitute a threat to humans as they can also be found in milk and meat.
